Jo Moseley – Joy Encourager, Midlife Adventurer & Beach Cleaner

Because you are never too old to do something wild and it is never too late to make a difference!

Hello! I’m Jo & it’s so good to meet you!

My goal is to help you rediscover and nourish your own joy & wellbeing going through the menopause so you can blossom into everything you are meant to be.

I share stories of my own adventures and bring you articles that I believe will help you.

Adventures: In August 2019, I became the first woman to SUP (stand up paddleboard) coast to coast from Liverpool to Goole, fundraising and picking up litter.

Teaching: I teach waterfitness – Hydro Jog and Aqua Aerobics – two evenings a week locally alongside my ‘day job’. I love this midlife ‘side hustle’.

Speaker: I have been asked to speak at wellbeing, adventure and midlife festivals on the joy of moving and adventures for our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Life was not always so joyful however. Here is how I went from sobbing in the supermarket aisle to paddleboarding coast to coast:

My Story:

From Bursting into Tears to Bursting Back to Life:

One day in May 2013, aged 48, I burst into tears in the biscuit aisle of Tesco’s. I was tired, anxious and stressed.

Totally overwhelmed by life.

Both my parents were going through chemotherapy, I was a working Mum flying solo with my boys and in the early stages of the peri-menopause (without realising it!)

Welcome to the indoor rowing machine:

A friend lent me an old indoor rowing machine, suggesting it might help me sleep. Within two weeks, I was feeling brighter and better.

Million Metres and Marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support:

A year later, I began an 8 month fundraising challenge to row a million metres and marathon in memory of my Mum who had died of Lymphoma at Christmas 2013.

Rowing 10,000m every other night for 200 days I completed the project with a marathon (yes, 26.2 miles or 42, 195m!) on 21st December 2014. The 1st anniversary of her death and 5 days before my 50th birthday. We raised £10,000 with Gift Aid.

I was incredibly touched by the support I was given, including BBC Radio Leeds, Yorkshire Post , & BBC Get Inspired who kindly shared my challenge.

Following my Curiosity, Finding my Joy

My shattered self confidence had been renewed by the challenge. I also realised that being active had really helped me physically, mentally and emotionally through my menopause.

I explored other joyful ways to move, returning to my love of the sea – with wild swimming, bodyboarding and stand up paddleboarding.

Aged 52, I began running with Couch to 5k and added an extra dimension by running and picking up litter – I’m a plogger and active member of the 2 MinuteBeachClean community, taking two minutes each day to do my own litter pick or beach clean wherever I am.

Joy Encourager, Midlife Adventurer and Beach Cleaner:

I have been honoured to be featured in magazines (Daily Telegraph Womens Sport, County Living, Good Housekeeping, Fit + Well, Prima, Sunday Telegraph Stella Magazine) on websites (This Girl Can, Henpicked, Sporting Heads, Rejuvage, Be Real Campaign), podcasts (Out of the Bubble, 261 Fearless, Magnificent Midlife, The Mother of All Movement) and on BBC Look North TV and BBC Radio Leeds and Scotland as a result – sharing the joy of tiny adventures and encouraging other women to find their own wellbeing, happiness & purpose in midlife.

I have also spoken at Kendal Mountain Festival, Love Trails Festival and Women Adventure Expo.

My short film made on my iPhone Small Things, Great Love (about beach cleaning and plogging) was screened in London in 2018 and my second film, Finding Joy, has been screened in London at Feminista Film Festival.

My aim is to show other women going through the menopause how they too can discover and nourish their own joy & wellbeing, find purpose in midlife and blossom into everything they are meant to be as new chapters begin.

Because you are never too old to do something wild and it is never too late to make a difference!

I look forward to sharing the journey with you!

Jo xx
